Designing a Residential Outdoor Entertainment Destination

Located on a sprawling estate in Old Westbury, New York, this residential project was conceived as a fully integrated entertainment environment capable of supporting everything from quiet family afternoons to large-scale social events. The property included a resort-style pool, cabana lounge and bar, louvred pergola, spa terrace, tennis court, fire pits, and multiple gathering areas woven throughout the landscape.

Architech Designs led the technology integration and systems design, working alongside The Laurel Group to coordinate infrastructure, placement, and long-term usability throughout the ten-month project. The goal was to create a property-wide experience that was consistent while preserving the character of the architecture and landscape design.

The decision to use K-array happened quickly. During the evaluation process, a portable demonstration system was brought to the property. According to the project team, the client's decision was nearly immediate. Rather than relying on a single system stretched across the estate, Architech Designs approached the project as a series of connected listening environments, each designed around how the space would actually be used.

The main pool deck, the property's primary entertainment space, was equipped with four marine-grade Rumble KU315 subwoofers, designed for outdoor installations right out of the box, paired with four custom marine-grade Kayman KY102 loudspeakers. Together, they provide the output and coverage needed for everything from relaxed afternoons by the pool to large outdoor gatherings, while allowing the system to withstand long-term exposure to the elements.

Just beyond the pool, the louvred pergola creates a more intimate destination for conversation and dining. Four marine-grade Kobra KK52 I loudspeakers mounted discreetly to the interior pergola posts provide detailed, even coverage, while a Rumble KU212 subwoofer adds low-frequency reinforcement.

At the cabana bar, two Vyper KV52 I loudspeakers and a Rumble KU210 subwoofer deliver focused coverage around the television viewing area. The tennis court extends the property's layered audio approach with four Domino KF210 loudspeakers mounted at each corner of the court. The result is balanced, consistent coverage across the court that allows music to complement the game without overpowering the surrounding outdoor spaces.

Outdoor durability was a key consideration throughout the design process. With equipment exposed to seasonal weather, humidity, and poolside conditions, reliability was just as important as acoustic performance. The Rumble KU315 subwoofers are marine-grade out of the box, while the Kayman and Kobra loudspeakers received a custom marine-grade finish specifically for this installation.

Whether hosting a summer celebration, watching a movie by the pool, enjoying dinner beneath the pergola, or relaxing in the spa, each space maintains its own character while remaining connected to the larger experience. Audio coverage feels natural and the technology supports the lifestyle the property was designed to deliver.

Lead technician Christian Bautista summarized the project best:

"What made this project cool is that this client genuinely cared about the experience. He didn't want great sound because somebody else had it; he wanted serious performance. And he got it."
